Birdwatching in Bardia National Park

Bardia Hideaway Cottage has three talented birdwatching guides - B, Resham and Kali, all are registered with the Park Authorities and Kali is the only female guide at Bardia.

According to the Park Authorities there are approximately 400 species of bird resident or migratory in Bardia. Practically speaking B has seen 276 birds in the last 15 years, although during the conflict time it was very difficult to go into the park and watch the birds, as carrying binoculars created suspicion from all sides in the conflict. The most recent birds seen by B are the Asian Short Toed Lark and the Grey Bushchat.

Patrice Correia,a French wildlife photographer who has been photographing the birds in the area around the lodges skirting the park, has identified over 100 birds that are common in the local area and easily viewable without even entering the park itself. He has a beautiful website here: (http://www.utopia-expo.com/)

Many of the birds are seasonal and depending on the time of year the numbers that can be seen in a 2-5 day period varies widely:

Monsoon: 100-175 birds
Winter: 150-200 birds
Spring: 50-100 mainly resident birds

Rare birds that it's possible to see with a little bit of luck include:
Bengal Floricon; Great Hornbill; Sarus Crane; Swamp Francolin; Spiny Babbler and the Black Capped Kingfisher
